The Local People

Like the marine predators, people living along the east coast have exploited the Sardine Run for centuries. Parts of the shoal can come close inshore and, when this happens, entire villages rush to the beaches and grab as many fish as they can.

But when it comes to income from tourism and sport, there’s no similar bonanza for the locals.

This is why we want to help them work with tourism operators and others to find ways in which revenues can be shared. Eventually, we may be able to develop resources along the coast that attract wealth to the local economy.
